Babies are prone to rashes and other skin problems. Baby acne and eczema are two skin conditions that are common in babies. Milia are tiny 1—2 mm pearly white cysts on the surface of the skin that are common in people of all ages, but are more noticeable in infants since they are present on the face. Milia form because the oil gland in the infant is still developing, and the skin does not slough off normally but will instead remain trapped in a pocket in the skin. Milia are classified into 2 types: primary milia, which occur on normal, healthy skin; and secondary milia, which are typically found on skin affected by another skin condition. Milia that are found on the roof of the mouth in infants are called Epstein pearls and are normal in newborns.

It's typically thought of as a teen problem, but acne can appear at any age, from birth to well into the adult years. Acne is treated differently depending on what age it appears. Find out how and why acne happens at different stages of life, when to start treatment or let it be, and when to see a doctor.

Does your infant have more pimples than an eighth-grader? Just when she seems ready for her close-up — head rounding out nicely, eyes less puffy and squinty — baby acne might be next. This pimply preview of puberty is incredibly common, usually beginning at 2 to 3 weeks of age and affecting about 20 to 40 percent of all newborns. Believe it or not, as with adolescent acne, hormones are believed to be mainly to blame. What's more, the pores in a baby's skin are not yet fully developed, making them easy targets for infiltration by dirt and the blossoming of blemishes.
